AI4Water is a research initiative that applies Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve the way water is managed in some of the Mediterranean’s most water-stressed regions — including Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, and southern Italy.

Semi-arid baseline plus irregular rain, frequent droughts, and rising temperatures intensify shortages, especially in Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, and southern Italy, hitting agriculture and drinking water.

Human Pressures on Aquifers

Over-extraction lowers water tables and triggers salt-water intrusion and pollution, most acute in coastal zones, compounding management challenges across participating countries.

Quantity Stress: Demand > Recharge

Rapid population and agricultural growth outpace natural replenishment, triggering intensive well-drilling and over-abstracted, declining aquifers.

Quality Decline: Multi-Source Pollution

Industrial, agricultural, and domestic contaminants degrade water quality, undermining safe, reliable supply and complicating treatment.
