Artificial Intelligence for Smarter Water Management in the Mediterranean

AI4Water is a research initiative that applies Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve the way water is managed in some of the Mediterranean’s most water-stressed regions — including Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, and southern Italy.

These areas face increasing challenges from climate changeirregular rainfall, and growing demand for water. By combining AI models with hydrological knowledge, AI4Water develops new solutions to optimize irrigation, protect groundwater, and ensure a fair and sustainable use of this vital resource.

The project also creates a Decision Support System (DSS) that helps local authorities and communities plan better, using real data and predictive tools. Developed together with local partners, it reflects the real needs and priorities of each region.

AI4Water is committed to open science, equity, and transparency. All data and tools are released under open licenses to make innovation accessible to everyone — researchers, policymakers, and citizens alike.

Through technology and collaboration, AI4Water aims to build a future where water is managed wisely, fairly, and sustainably across the Mediterranean.
